Since 1898, the community has supported The Glen Retirement System. As a not-for-profit organization, we value the generosity of our financial contributors as well as the dedication of our volunteers. The community has paved the way for The Glen to become what it is today, a thriving Continuing Care Retirement Community dedicated to our mission. It is part of our mission that we give back to our community that has been so gracious to us and a responsibility we are blessed to have. Our Community Outreach Program is an extension of our organization that is constantly expanding in our efforts to better serve those in our community.

The Glen-Zadeck Canine Program
For eight years now, The Glen has realized the positive effects of animals on our residents. The program began with seed money from the Zadeck Family Foundation. The purpose of this program is to provide appropriate animal companionship to older people. Visits from dogs can provide a welcome change from routine or facilitate the renewal of old friendships. People become more active and responsive both during and after visiting with animals. An animal visit can offer entertainment or a welcome distraction from pain and infirmity.
Our therapy dog program is led by our two Labradors, Connor and Zipper. Both dogs are registered as Pet Partners with The Delta Society. Maureen Kidd, Therapy Dog Program Coordinator, has worked with this program since its inception, and The Glen is proud to have her now as a full-time member of our family. Her leadership and dedication ensures that this wonderful asset to our Community Outreach Program will continue to thrive.
The Glen-Zadeck Canine Program provides therapy to those who live in our community and over the years has expanded beyond our campuses. The therapy dog program serves Shriners Hospital, Grace Home, the pediatric floor of LSU Health Sciences Center, Sutton Children's Medical Center, Holy Angels, and Arthur Circle Elementary School's R.E.A.D. Program. This year the program has expanded to include Eighty-First Street Early Childhood Education Center and Gingerbread House Bossier/Shreveport Children's Advocacy Center.

Caregivers Memory Loss Support Group

Since September of 2002, the Caregivers Memory-Loss Support Group has gathered on the first Thursday of each month to share their stories, comfort each other and benefit from a presentation that promises to further their knowledge and their ability to better care for their loved ones. Caring for those with Alzheimer's and other Dementia related illnesses is difficult, and this compassionate gathering provides relief in the form of fellowship and education. As part of this program, The Glen hosts an annual Caregiver's Seminar in conjunction with National Alzheimer's Month in November.
