March 23 & 24, 2011 - THE GLEN RETIREMENT SYSTEM: A LEADER ONCE MORE

On March 23rd and 24th, The Glen showed their leadership, once again, by representing North Louisiana at the 2nd Annual Culture Change Summit for Louisiana entitled “Soaring To New Heights with Person-Centered Care”. The event was held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, presented by L.E.A.D.E.R. (Louisiana Enhancing Aging With Dignity Through Empowerment and Respect), an organization that is advocating for Culture Change throughout the state. Culture Change is a movement dedicated to deinstitutionalizing long-term care and refocusing attention toward “person-centered” care. This is an international movement that is changing the future of aging.

Just one year ago, The Glen presented at this conference the experiences of their recent renovation and organizational transformation. The Glen was the first organization in the state to take on Culture Change with such magnitude, positioning themselves as leaders in the movement of culture change in Louisiana. The measurable outcomes of their efforts were just taking shape at the time of last year’s presentation. One year later, The Glen was able to present with a voice of more experience. Over the past year the incredible efforts of the staff, residents and families at The Glen have garnered the attention and respect of persons across the industry, from social workers to state surveyors. People recognize that culture change is successfully working at The Glen and that life in a nursing home has been changed for the best.

It is no surprise that this year, both sessions presented by The Glen staff were very well attended. On Wednesday, March 23rd, Rhonda Beauvais, President & CEO of The Glen Retirement System and Samantha Tole, Administrator of Village Health Care at The Glen, were joined by Joanne Rader, owner of Rader Consulting, to present at the session entitled “Getting Started: Lift Off to Culture Change”. Beauvais shared her experiences on working with a Board of Directors, Financial Consultants and Architects in the planning stages of transforming an entire organization and an aging institutional style building into a thriving homelike environment where staff feels empowered and residents are able to live happier and healthier lives. Tole, focused on the organizational aspect of the transition from the institutional model of care to the household model of care. She shared challenges and successes involving the staff, residents and families at The Glen.

The second session, led by Samantha Tole and Michelle Greer, Co-Director of Nursing at Village Health Care, took attendees through “The Journey Home For Village Health Care”. They were able to give an in-depth look at their experiences over the past three years that encompassed the planning, construction, organizational redesign and implementation of culture change. This session in particular was the most well attended session of the entire summit with over 400 attendees.
